I am a fourth year student studying a Bachelor in Fine Art Painting at LSAD.

I knew on the open day that LSAD was where I wanted to study. From the energy the building had and how in love people were with it, I knew I wanted to be a part of that.

I have always had a love for painting. After my first year in LSAD studying First Year Art & Design (a year where you try out different disciplines and other methods of working) I knew I wanted to finish my degree in the painting department. The studio spaces were just so exciting to me.

The thing I love most about LSAD is the sense of community and the people I’ve had the pleasure of working and learning with. I also love how wonderful the librarians are, and the Student’s Union who are incredibly hard working, welcoming and warm. I love the fact that I know my tutors and technicians on a one to one basis, who give you freedom to work towards something if you really believe in the importance of it.

One of the other hugely positive things about my course of study is the opportunity to study abroad with the Erasmus programme. I went to Utrecht in the Netherlands for the first semester in third year and it was the best thing I have ever done. From that experience I really learned how important it is that we have the store room in the college where different materials are at hand for the year. There is a small fee at the beginning but it is great outlet for papers, plaster, clay etc.

We also have numerous other class trips every year that are planned through the painting department. In the past we have gone to Amsterdam and Paris. This year we are going to Berlin. Our tutor always gets great deals and so it is not ridiculously expensive. Closer to home however Limerick itself has its own creative gems. LSAD has great connections with the Fablab in Limerick, Ormston House, Limerick City Gallery and the Hunt Museum – current art is accessible and there is always an exciting show opening or something going on in the city.

My advice to anyone considering LIT in their CAO? Everyone is to their own. You can so easily get sucked into the pressure of needing to know exactly want you want to do during “The-Big-L.C.” year! As my mother told me repeatedly, “put your blinders on, it’s your choice and your life. Your friends can’t live it or choose it for you”. You don’t have to have it all figured out straight away, and it isn’t a race.
