Thurles is a vibrant and prosperous town, located in North Tipperary. Serving a population of 8,000, it is a great, central location in which to live and study. Located on the River Suir, Thurles boasts many cultural and recreational facilities – the Source Arts Centre and Theatre, a modern leisure centre, a multi-screen cinema complex, the superb Cabragh Wetlands as well as the renowned Semple Stadium, the spiritual home of hurling, a stone’s throw from the LIT Thurles campus. In Liberty Square in the heart of Thurles is Hayes Hotel which held the first meeting of the GAA in 1884 and still remains a popular meeting point for the thousands of GAA followers that descend on Thurles each summer. The local Lár na Páirce GAA visitor centre tells the story of Gaelic Games from its foundation to the present day and is well worth a visit.
The LIT Thurles Campus is located on the Nenagh road, close to Semple Stadium. The campus incorporates a 200 seater conference centre, lecture theatres, library, computer suites, science laboratories and specialist games labs, as well as the cutting-edge LIT SportsLab, a world-standard sports strength and conditioning complex. The Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre is also located on the campus complex, while the Tipperary Technology Park is adjacent, creating an integrated ecosystem to support new enterprise development.
Getting to Thurles
Easily accessible owing to its central location, Thurles lies within easy reach of all our main cities. As well as being situated close to the M8 motorway, it boasts an excellent rail service, given its location on the main Dublin-Cork, Limerick and Kerry lines. The town is serviced by over twenty trains per day connecting with locations such as Portlaoise, Kildare, Newbridge, Mallow, Ennis, Tralee and Killarney.
