Sheelagh Carew – IBM Design

I studied Creative Multimedia in LIT Clonmel. Now I’m part of IBM Design and hope to help create the technology of the future.

The Creative Multimedia course was my first choice as I wanted to develop my design skills and merge with the increasing demand for programming subjects. This course encompassed a wide choice of design disciplines and the software skills that are beneficial in an agile team environment.

IBM is one of the biggest multinational employers in Ireland today. At IBM Ireland businesses work together to research, develop, sell and support IBM’s Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social and Security technology, across Telecoms, Retail, Banking, Healthcare and Utilities domains.

My journey with IBM began with their Extreme Blue Internship. This included 12 weeks intense creative thinking where I was working in a small team of students with disciplines in Software Engineering, Data Science and Product management. In that time we are asked to solve a real business problem. At the end of the 12 weeks we showcased our final product to executives, business partners and clients at the IBM Extreme Blue Conference in Germany.

Following the internship I worked as a front end developer before travelling to Austin, Texas for a 3 months training experience in IBM Design Thinking with 30 other Designers from all over the world.

Today, I work as a UX Designer part of the Smarter Workforce portfolio team. I work alongside a visual designer and front end developer in Dublin and the rest of the team are based in America and India. As a UX Designer my focus is to place the user at the centre so we can craft experiences that connect people with our products and services in a meaningful, enduring ways.

For me, it started in LIT
