Jill Holmes, Culinary Arts

I had studied a BA in Computer Systems and a Masters in Interactive Media before returning to LIT to study Culinary Arts in 2013. The Culinary Arts course at LIT is fantastic and I have learned so much from the knowledgeable lecturers who teach there.

During my time in LIT, I had an opportunity to enter the prestigious Knorr Student Chef of the Year competition. After a thrilling cook off hosted by Belfast Metropolitan College at its state-of-the-art Titanic Quarter Campus, I was delighted to be crowned KNOR Student Chef of the Year 2015. During the Final, I had to overcome a challenging theme set out by KNORR but also had to fight off the challenge of 14 rising stars to claim top prize. As part of my award I will travel to Copenhagen, which is the driving force behind the Nordic food movement, for a trip that centres on a dining experience at Noma, which was voted Best Restaurant in the World by Restaurant Magazine in four of the last five years, along with a bespoke workshop hosted by the Nordic Food Lab. I am extremely grateful to my lecturers who prepared me for the competition and who were integral to my success in the competition and were so generous with their time and expertise.

I finished the Culinary Arts course at LIT in May 2015, and I am now pursuing a PhD which will be based on a restaurant of the future combining my two passions in life, food and technology.
